Beach areas

Crandon is a two-mile Atlantic beach on the north half of the island. Promenade. Concession stands. Picnic tables and grills. Parking for just under 3,000 cars. That is the county's description, not a brochure.

The usual swim is the sandbar. Miami-Dade Parks says it protects swimmers from crashing surf. It also says the bar shifts with squalls, storms, and currents. The depth you walked last month is not a promise for today.

Stay near a lifeguard. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Ocean Rescue guards county beaches, including Crandon, 365 days a year from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Headquarters for that crew is here. Skip the unguarded edges if you have kids.

South end: cabanas and a longer walk. North end: the water-sports concession. The county lists kiteboarding rentals and lessons at the beachside concession, and kite boards and kayaks at the north concession. Personal paddleboards and kayaks do not launch from the beach. Those go from the marina, unless you rented through the concession or an EcoAdventures tour.

Rules that actually get enforced: no glass, no pets except service animals, no flotation devices in bathing areas. Beach wheelchairs are at the beach areas. If you want a quieter park and no lifeguards, that is Bill Baggs, not here.

Parking and arrival timing

Official parking, checked Oct 2026: $7 plus tax Monday through Thursday, $10 plus tax Friday through Sunday. The main office is 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. The park itself is listed sunrise to sunset.

Skip the 11 a.m. Saturday arrival. Do 8:30, or come on a weekday. The lots are huge and they still fill. That is neighbor advice, not a county vacancy count. Use the live crowd estimate before you sit in causeway traffic. If the booth is waving people off, do not circle. Turn around or go to Bill Baggs — knowing Bill Baggs can close at capacity too.

Pay what the lot signs say. If they point you to PayByPhone, write down the zone number before you open the app. Coming from the mainland, check the causeway first. A full lot after a 40-minute crawl is a wasted morning.

Food and amenities

Cabanas are on the south end — book through the official Miami-Dade Parks page.

The county lists concession stands on the beach. Fine for a drink and a hot dog. Skip them if you want a real lunch. Drive five minutes into the Village, or use the Crandon-area restaurant list.

The golf course has Fairways on the Key. That is a sit-down at 6700 Crandon Blvd, not a beach shack. Picnic tables and grills are already in the park if you packed food. No glass.

Kids and the nature center

If you have kids, this is the beach. Lifeguards. A sandbar. Picnic tables. The Family Amusement Center next to the beach has the historic carousel — horses built in 1949 — and an outdoor roller rink. Birthday picnic shelters there are a county rental, not a walk-up ride ticket we can price from the park page.

The Visitor and Nature Center is at 6767 Crandon Blvd, open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Call 305-361-6767. Self-guided trails, a mangrove boardwalk to the fossilized reef overlook, and naturalist walks through the hammock. Skip the zoo nostalgia unless someone asks. The old Crandon Zoo moved decades ago. What is left is the gardens, the trails, and Bear Cut Preserve.

For a half-day with kids: sandbar first, carousel if they still have energy, nature center if it is too hot. For a broader island plan, use things to do.

Water quality and beach cam

Florida DOH samples Crandon Park North and Crandon Park South as two locations. A Good at one is not a Good at the other. A sample is a dated snapshot, not a live reading. Check today's water quality before anyone goes in. Then look at the flag and rip-current forecast. The lifeguard at the nearest tower still makes the call.

There is no official Crandon Park beach camera. The Key Biscayne beach cam is the Village camera. Use it for sky, crowd color, and whether the day looks washed out. Do not treat it as a Crandon view. It also cannot show bacteria. That is the water-quality page.

Seaweed is a third check. Sargassum is a regional satellite outlook, not a report of what is on this exact stretch. If you only want to hear about it when an advisory changes, use the form on this page.
